Self Portraits

The beauty industry around the world profits from our desire to be desired.

We are sold every conceivable product to alter how we look: makeup, brushes, liquids, powders, creams, oils, gels, acids, serums; products to remove hair from one part of the body, products to add hair to other parts of the body. We camouflage our vulnerabilities with products and build our sense of worth on the foundation of our insecurities.

This series of self-portraits record the imprints of my body on expired, silver-gelatin paper. I smear my body against the surface of the paper coated with products that promise to alter my appearance. The result is unexpected and uncontrolled. The resulting images transform the bright glitter, the vivid colors, the silky liquids into muted, brownish abstractions.

The cosmetic products are used to reveal rather than conceal my vulnerabilities, fears and insecurities.
